Hazlehurst, GA (September 3, 2021) – At 4:30 p.m. on the afternoon of Thursday, September 2, an explosion occurred at a workplace in Hazlehurst.
According to the Jeff Davis County Sheriff’s Office, the accident happened at Hazlehurst Wood Pellets. It is believed that pellets at the workplace started to overheat due to unknown reasons. When they became ignited, there was a large flash and an explosion. According to police, there was a bad fire at the same plant six years before.
Paramedics, fire crews, and numerous other responders were immediately called to the scene. Four employees suffered injuries due to the immense fire. Two of the victims were severely injured and had to be airlifted. One of the victims sustained a serious hand injury.
The workplace was blocked off for a period of time as fire crews worked to bring the fire under control.
No further details have been released but the investigation into the accident continues.
